Helicopter & Air Tours
Helicopter flights on the Big Island are among
the most exciting to be found anywhere on earth.
One of the main reasons is that you can fly
directly over an active volcano complete with flowing lava, lava tubes,
cinder cones, volcanic gases and steam that rises sometimes four and five
stories high as the hot lava enters and cools in the blue Pacific. Try
visiting a live volcano anywhere else in the world!
This is a "once in a lifetime" flight and its sure to be the
"highlight of any trip to the Big Island. Flights to the volcano can
be taken from both the Hilo or Kona side, however the most appealing
prices will be directly from Hilo because it lies such a short distance
from the volcano summit. If you're staying in Kona please allow about 2 or
2 1/2 hours drive time to get to Hilo. It might he wise to schedule a trip
in the middle of the day to allow for the drive. It's always wise to book
these flights in advance because they can fill up on a moment's notice.
Although the volcano has been in an active phase for over a decade and
pumps out volumes of lava each day, it will vary from time to time in its
volatility. If you're lucky enough to catch it in one of its very active
phases, you will have stories to tell for the rest of your life. This is
truly one of the great natural wonders of the world and the opportunity to
see it by helicopter should not be missed. If at all possible, keep in
mind also that the only way to view the active portions of the volcano is
by air, and you are not permitted down near those areas on the ground.
Do yourself and your family a favor. Don't miss
seeing an active volcano by helicopter!
